Questions we get about Wisconsin
- Is Wisconsin really community property?
- It is a marital property state, which works the same way for a horse. Property acquired during the marriage is generally owned equally, so the appraised value is close to what gets split.
- Does what we paid for our horse set its value?
- It is one piece of evidence, dated to the day of the sale. Horses gain and lose value with training, age, and soundness, so a price from three years ago tells us where to start and little more.
